For Need of Endurance: What the Bible Says of Perseverance
Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.
To be in steadfast pursuit of a goal is a virtue widely celebrated throughout the Bible. It is this quality that pushes people to muscle through whatever trials are in their way. This is what will help us achieve our divine purpose.
What the Bible Says of Perseverance
Almost all the Bible verses about overcoming challenges speak of perseverance, especially where it depicts the triumph of an individual. In the Bible, no one is granted God's grace out of luck or coincidence. From the old patriarchs to the great prophets to the exemplified apostles, these people all had to endure torturous hardship, undue persecution, and countless disappointments. Yet, they were not broken. They did not give in to temptation and hid away forever. They persisted.
And it is their perseverance that made them worthy of their faith in and obedience to God.
Among the patriarchs, there were Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. These three are the founding fathers of the Israelite nation, who each faced looming trials that would have sundered even the best among their peoples. Abraham was compelled to flee his homeland, while his son Isaac willingly submitted himself to near-sacrifice. And Jacob himself wrestled with an angel. For all of these and their faith in the Lord, they were rewarded the future of a great nation.
From the prophets, there were Israel, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel. Though gifted with revelations from God, they did not live rosy lives and were subject to much ridicule and persecution. There were many times when they were threatened with death. Yet, this did not stop them from proclaiming the Lord's message, even when it invited great danger to themselves.
All the apostles suffered immensely. There is no doubt about this. This was the price for being intimate followers of Christ. There was imprisonment, humiliation, beatings, and all manner of tragedies, but their commitment to Christ and their gratitude for his love never once wavered. And because of this, Christianity thrives to this day.
For Need of Endurance
Thus, perseverance is essential to Christian living, and here are some Bible verses to back that up:
For Need of Endurance: Galatians 5:22-23
In these verses, perseverance is listed as one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. What this implies then is that not only is perseverance a much-needed quality in being a Christian, but it is also a natural outcome of being a believer when they allow the Holy Spirit to work through them.
For Need of Endurance: James 1:2-4
The verses teach us that the existence of a trial is not to hinder us, nor is it there to stop us from moving forward. The essence of a trial is to test the firmness of our faith. To have faith is like having a knife. The possession of it already means something, but if it is not continuously honed, it will only rust. Thus, tests are there to strengthen our faith.
For Need of Endurance: Romans 5:3-4
What these verses say is that suffering has meaning and that it hardens and strengthens us. We have grown to become more perseverant when we suffer. As such, perseverance is what makes character. And to have character is to be hopeful. Therefore, it's a crucial part of growing spiritually and maturing.
For Need of Endurance: Hebrews 10:36
This line in the Bible is one of the most powerful ones because it places heavy weight on the necessity of perseverance. It says that this is what you need to open up and receive the promised blessings of God. Those who endure until the end are those who will ultimately be saved.
The Perseverant Soul in You
To persevere is to have the quality to overcome life's challenges. When we are steadfast and focused, our God-given purpose can be achieved. By reading the Bible and understanding how it conceives and depicts perseverance, we recognize it as vital to Christian living. This virtue will help us through to the end.
